Scléip na hÓige 2008 was held in Cork from the 28 – 31 October. Over 600 students from Ógras, Cumann na bhFiann, Spleodar, Feachtas and Óige na Gaeltachta took part in the events. Ógras members came from all over Ireland to participate in Scléip na hÓige.
Events started on Tuesday night, 28th October, with a show by the magician Zak Powers and then a céilí. On Wednesday morning the different youth organisations had the opportunity to organise their own events around Cork. Wednesday afternoon was packed with Oireachtas evens – a table quiz, a debate and a drama competition. When night came everyone went to the Town Hall, where Fiach preformed followed by a disco with Rónán Mac Aodha Bhuí from Géill Slí.
Sports competitions were organised for Thursday morning – football, basketball, tug of war and volleyball. All the youth organisations competed against each other. Sean-nós dancing, samba drumming and circus skills workshops were also held. TG4 were there recording for the evening news. To end Scléip an African drumming group preformed and the final event of Scléip 2008 was a big céilíwith the band Téada
Scléip na hÓige 2007 was held in Westport, Co. Mayo and Ógras members took part in the events from 31 December to 2 November. On reaching Westport on the Wednesday evening, we took part in the Scléip na hÓige Parade. Everyone from the youth organisations was dressed up for the parade as we walked around around the town of Westport. For a while it seemed we were in a mini Gaeltacht there was so much Irish being spoken on the streets of the town. Afterwards we went to the Zak Powers Show in the Castlecourt Hotel where some of the audience allowed themselves to be hypnotised and made right "amadáin" of themselves up on the stage. It was a truly hilarious performance and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. On Wednesday night, a disco was organised for all the youth groups with Géill Slí and the music was provided by Raidió na Gaeltachta.
Thursday was another fun day. We spent the morning in Westport House playing crazy games and engaging in water events such as Slippery Dip and Cadhacáil. It was a real fun morning and enjoyed by all. In the afternoon different competitions were held between the various youth groups involving debates, quizzes and stage shows. The night saw everyone enjoying the music of the Máimín Cajun Band.
The other youth groups went home on the Friday morning because they arrived at the Scléip a day earlier than Ógras. Ógras members spent the morning at the Delphi Adventure Centre taking part in land and water events. After some free time in the afternoon, we went bowling in Castlebar. At night, we were at the T F Royal Hotel where a magician showed us a number of tricks and we then had our disco with a DJ from Galway.
The trip to Scléip na hÓige 2007 was full of sport and craic and no one was rushing to return home. We are already looking forward to Scéip na hÓige 2008 which will be held in Cork.
A drama competition 'Seó Árdáin' is being organised in every region and will be taking place in February 2012, for ógras and Óg-Ógras clubs. All clubs should try and take part as there are money and cup prizes to be won.
