We in Ógras are currently in the process of commencing our Climate Justice Project for 2024 and we are very grateful to the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY) for awarding us a grant under the Climate Justice Fund.
This is the 4th year that we are focusing on this very important topic and we are very excited to be working with the extremely talented and creative media production company - Funk Soul Media to create a short documentary film with our young people.
This year’s Project will focus on three of the Sustainable Development Goals - SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) which our older members will work on and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 14 ( Life Below Water) which will be the focus for our younger members.
A group of young people from various clubs around the country will meet up in Westport, Co. Mayo from 22-26 July to create a short film, which will involve interviewing local people who grow their own fruit and vegetables. They will research sustainable food sources, which products grow in Ireland, who are the farmers that are practising sustainable farming methods, and they will hear from businesses – cafes, restaurants and shops that are working to reduce food waste and pollution.
The young people will learn a host of new skills, from interview techniques, setting up an interview, using various cameras, using sound equipment, recording, editing and plenty more.
The participants will have a central role in the Project which will help them develop their decision-making skills, making their ideas know to the group, problem-solving, the importance of open communication and team-work. These are all skills that will help with the social and personal development of the young person which is a core element of the work we do.
The group will also have plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful countryside around Westport and Mayo during the organised outdoor activities – swimming, hillwalking, treasure hunt etc.
