How To Set Up An Ógras Club

Setting up an Ógras club is a rewarding way to support young people in using Irish socially, building friendships, and becoming active in their local community. As the saying goes, “Tús maith leath na hoibre” – a good start is half the work, and this is certainly true when forming a youth club. With careful planning, preparation, and support from the Ógras team, your club can get off to a strong and sustainable start.

This guide outlines the key steps involved in setting up a new Ógras club, from planning and insurance to training, funding, and day - to - day operation.

Setting Up An Ógras Club

Ógras clubs are typically aimed at young people aged 13 – 18. Many clubs also choose to set up an Óg - Ógras club for younger members, usually aged 8 – 12.

  • Do leaders need to be fluent in Irish?

Full fluency is not required. Leaders and members are expected to use the Irish they have and support one another in improving their language skills over time.

  • How long does Garda Vetting or Access NI take?

The vetting process usually takes between 6 – 8 weeks. Leaders may begin once forms have been submitted, but vetting must be underway before the club starts.

  • Does the club need its own insurance?

Yes. While some venues have existing cover, it is strongly recommended that each club has its own insurance to ensure full protection for members, leaders, and committees.

Club activities must be covered by insurance. Often community halls etc, have insurance that the club can be covered under. However, if the club is not covered under such a scheme, Ógras provide insurance for our clubs.
